Are Probiotics Necessary & What Are Prebiotics?
Updated: May 30, 2020

PRE-biotics are a specific type of fiber that facilitates the growth and maintenance of specific beneficial bacteria within the intestinal tract, while PRO-biotics are the beneficial bacteria themselves.
Taking prebiotic supplements, like partially hydrolyzed guar gum, 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥, like when you take antibiotics or eat a low-fiber diet.
Taking probiotics can help here as well, but you need to choose the right strains and doses for your goals while also ensuring that they colonize by feeding them the fiber and prebiotics they need.
Many people eliminate fibrous foods from their diet when they suffer from certain intestinal conditions because the fiber causes them distress. If you do that, then you need to ensure that you supplement with pro- and prebiotics to maintain intestinal health. We have a lot of data indicating that long-term low-fiber diets cause the extinction of beneficial bacteria and increase the creation of 𝘵𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘤 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 from protein putrefaction, along with long-term consequences like worse metabolic health and colon cancer. We don’t have these long-term studies in humans, but there is no reason to believe we would be any different.
