COVID & Gym Closures
Updated: Apr 1, 2020
Here in New York, and in most other places, the gyms are closed due to the increased risk of transmitting the COVID virus.
It’s an understandable measure to try and minimize exposure within the population, but many people are really taking a hit from it. And not because they are worried about getting fat or having their muscles fall off.
There’s a huge 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 around working out, as if the only thing that matters is physical.
The reality is that many people workout for mental health, be it stress relief, anxiety, or depression. It also gives people a purpose; a goal to work towards.
So, when someone complains about not having the gym available to them, have some 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 and quit berating them. We aren’t tearing down those who are losing their jobs, so why would we hammer on those whom are losing their strategies to ensure their mental health?
Be extra gentle with people during this time. Anxiety and depression are likely to skyrocket in your “𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨” gym obsessed homie.
