Rethinking Ethanol During COVID

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

Only essential businesses are allowed to stay open in New York due to the COVID measures being put in place. ⁣

Did you know that includes liquor stores? One of the reasons given for liquor stores remaining open is to prevent the influx of hospital patients detoxing from withdrawal. ⁣

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗱. ⁣

Most people won’t have medical detox problems, and a lot of the issues around alcohol are due to 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, not actual physiological issues. ⁣

If you expect to have problems when you stop drinking, then you will. If you don’t have expectations, then you won’t have medical detox problems unless you were pounding alcohol on a daily basis or have a rare underlying condition.

On top of that, one of the news anchors said that people are going to go crazy because they can’t leave their house to get a drink when stressed. ⁣

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? ⁣

If your life is going to go downhill because you can’t get a drink, then this is a great time to reassess your relationship with alcohol.⁣

This pandemic is a fantastic time to reassess our relationship with many autopilot behaviors. Alcohol abuse (not to the point of rare physiological dependence) is a virus in itself that has worn out its welcome in society. ⁣
